HOW TO RESKILL LIFE BEYOND COVID-19 – START TOMORROW

Commander Sanjeev Krishna Deshpande, Indian Navy, Retd

Imagine empty roads, clean air, empty offices and reverse migration of IT workforce along with students from cities to towns. Companies deciding on making telecom and IT infrastructure strong in towns and villages. Add to it, work from home as normal, with renting or buying homes in work cities a matter of past.

So COVID-19 made us wiser or bold. What we could achieve in past, but never attempted. We tailored it in two months of crisis. Human behaviour is a mystery but for sure necessity is the mother of all inventions. Today rivers are so clean that we couldn’t have imagined it without coronavirus visit to this planet.

So whereas, big fish or manageable managed to live on with some dent to lifestyle. The small fish and businesses/employee will either perish or will have to find an alternate source of income. But life moves on. If school shift to teaching online, doctors shift to prescription online, automobile industries shift to staggered shifts and people to only online buying.

Slowly companies will replace manpower by automation as lessons learnt from Coronaviruses will make them think on these lines. The workforce may be replaced by heavy automated machinery which will be fast and never tiring, hence work hours no limitations and speedy completion of projects and no dependency on manpower availability as time is money.

Considering the aforesaid a fear psychosis will engulf many about job security and place to live and survive.

So how do we cope with it?

The part answer would be skill yourself differently, as per new normal. Let us guess what was not affected by Coronavirus. In my opinion two things. First, the existence of life was unaffected for those maintaining physical/social distancing with the hygiene of hand wash repeatedly. In other words safety of the ones who maintained distancing & hygiene discipline.

The second was- all that was online did not get affected during coronavirus.

So first skill for everyone would be to maintain social distance in public & wash your hands regularly. There is no alternative to this, and it’s also hygienic & encourages good health virtues.

Second skill to garner is online knowledge or digital marketing. I am sure many think it’s not their cup of tea and it’s too complicated. Believe you me, I have been a mentor for many years now in an NGO (deAsra – run by Mr Anand Deshpande – MD Persistent) to get people from rural areas to understand the power of digital marketing for their businesses and you will be surprised by their uptake and speed in learning digital marketing (DM) and flourishing at least 10X times in their businesses after implementing DM. I have also addressed Seminars on DM at Symbiosis & National level for MBA & undergraduate students at various forums, I can say with confidence and experience that, the language is no barrier to learn DM. Also, formal education is not a must. What you need is a PC and net connection to exploit DM. But you may always learn it on someone’s aid and once you learn it you may buy or as an employee in a company you may not need your own resources(PC +internet).

If you are a keen learner and know any language (English, Hindi, French, Spanish, Bhojpuri) you can start earning through DM sooner than later in a big way. Today net has voice, text and image searches. You can dictate in your dialect and it will get translated to the language you think your target audiences are on. Some sources of earning through DM are:-

  1. Blogging
  2. Affiliate marketing
  3. Content Writing
  4. Online Education – Teaching
  5. Website development – With CMS available you can develop in one hr.
  6. Mobile application development.
  7. Business Analysis
  8. Advisor for SEO, SEM, SMM
  9. Freelance – Google Ads/ FB Ads
  10. Report generation tools
  11. Auditors of DM tools and Reports
  12. Marketing advisor for companies
  13. Freelancing for sales and marketing
  14. As language translators

The list above can be endless. But trust me do not lose hope catch on to DM the courses vary from two months to six months depending upon your time availability and you can find the online course too.

I have to confess the expressions on faces of my clients at NGO, I see while mentoring them is like DM was so easy, why didn’t, I learn it earlier, it was the mindset in terms of the degree of difficulty and fear of failure. But the satisfaction factor is worth experiencing.

This article is my humble advice to the community at large, do not lose hope, you can and you will overcome this phase too. COVID-19 can stay or go, as future decides, we shall move on to new normal, humans are indeed adaptable.
